The last time a captain from anywhere but Ulster raised the Vera McWeeney Cup aloft, back in 1985 when Leinster were the under-21 interprovincial winners, Pamela Magill was just six years old. Yesterday, at Garryduff, the Irish international was presented with the trophy after her province extended their remarkable record in the tournament to 15 wins in a row.

They did so with ease, winning all four of their matches without conceding a goal, finishing five points clear of runners-up Munster.

The hosts and Connacht did at least make Ulster work hard for their wins on Saturday, losing only by 1-0 margins. Pamela Orr scored Ulster's winner 10 minutes from time against Munster in the opening match of the tournament while South African international Jenny Wilson got the goal that gave Ulster all three points in the second half of their game against Connacht later in the day. Yesterday, though, Ulster cruised to maximum points with 4-0 and 5-0 wins over South East and Leinster, respectively. Orr, Wilson, Magill and Karen Alexander got Ulster's goals against South East, with Wilson and Alexander scoring again against Leinster, adding to goals from Claire Parkhill, Jenny McDonagh and Helen Cathcart to complete the rout.

Munster secured the runners-up spot in the tournament with a 1-1 draw against South East in yesterday's final game - Linda Caulfield equalised in the last minute from a penalty stroke after Orlaith Curtin had given Munster the lead.

It proved to be a desperately disappointing tournament for Leinster who lost three of their four games, only beating Connacht with a second-half Audrey McCormack goal in the first of yesterday's matches. Meanwhile in Senior A of the Leinster League Australian Peta Gallagher opened her account for Loreto, scoring twice in their 6-1 victory over Muckross while goals from Nikki Fuller and Johanna Phelan gave Pembroke Wanderers a 2-0 win over bottom club Railway Union.
