Trinity prevail in shoot-out

It took a wonderful save by Barbara Sheehy-Skeffington to separate the teams in yesterday's Chilean Cup final in Glasnevin, which her Trinity side won, for the third successive year, beating UCC 5-4 on penalty strokes. There was so little between the teams in the course of normal and extra time, which finished 1-1, that it seemed almost inevitable that a shoot-out would be required. UCC had taken the lead in the ninth minute of an absorbing final when EJ Walsh flicked a shot past Sheehy-Skeffington from a short corner. The holders responded, however, pinning the Cork students back until they were rewarded with an equaliser from Linda Caulfield, seven minutes later, when she was first to a rebound off Amalia Scannell's pads. Both sides enjoyed spells of intense pressure for the remainder of the game but neither could break down two superb defences.

In the shoot-out, which went to 4-4 and then sudden death, Caulfield scored what proved to be the winner for Trinity just before Johanna Hyland saw her stroke saved by Sheehy-Skeffington.
