CAROLINE HEDWALL and Sophie Gustafson renewed their successful Friday afternoon partnership in the fourballs to great effect hammering the American pairing of Angela Stanford and Stacey Lewis six and five.

The Europeans were three under for the 13 holes against opponents who had just one birdie and registered five bogeys and a double bogey to make their opponents’ task considerably easier.

England’s Karren Stupples and her Dutch partner Christal Boeljon ran into a red-hot combination in Morgan Pressel and Ryann O’Toole. One down playing the par three, sixth, the Americans went birdie, eagle, birdie to go two up.

The Europeans had a birdie on nine and levelled at the 13th but successive birdies restored the Americans’ advantage and they closed out the match on the 16th for a three-and-two victory.

Maria Hjorth and Anna Nordqvist, who had lost in this format on Friday morning, atoned with a three-and-two win over Brittany Lang and Julie Inkster. The Europeans were three up at the turn and rarely troubled on the back nine despite a run of three consecutive bogeys: their opponents were equally profligate.

Catriona Matthew and Azahara Munoz had a regulation four at the final hole for a win, having gone to the 18th tee one down. It was a fighting half against the in-form Paula Creamer and Christie Kerr.
