Richardson bows out

Damien Richardson yesterday announced his decision to step down as manager of Shelbourne FC. Despite his success at the club during the last three years, the news was not unexpected to those close to Tolka Park.

"I feel that the time is right now for me to move on after three successful and enjoyable years with Shelbourne," said Richardson after his resignation decision. "The only reason is to enable myself to pursue other interests within the game. I want to thank everyone at Shelbourne, the backroom staff, players and supporters for all their support."

Shelbourne had suffered a triple disappointment this season when they ended up as runners-up in the League, FAI Cup and League Cup. They were pipped for the league title by just one point when St Patrick's pulled ahead at the last moment as Shelbourne endured a shock defeat to Dundalk at Oriel Park. They had to come back and face Cork City in the FAI Cup nine days later, but with morale still low could only manage a draw. Cork won the replay 1.0.

Richardson came to Tolka Park at the start on the 1995 season and that October led Shelbourne to their first League Cup with a win over Sligo Rovers. The following May they took the FAI Cup for the first time in three years by defeating league champions St Patrick's. They successfully defended that title last year.

The first disappointment this season came when they lost the League Cup to Sligo early in the year. However, Shelbourne's impressive league run ensured it was a minor setback. The disappointment of the league climax, however, no doubt had a huge bearing on their Cup final campaign and so they ended the year without a trophy.

There has been no decision on a possible replacement, although a decision is expected within the next few weeks.

In the meantime, Shelbourne have announced that they will offer Richardson a testimonial in the near future. No date has been set.
