Pegasus secure first trophy comfortably

WOMENS HOCKEY: With the Ulster league title yet to be mathematically sealed, even if it is all but secured, Pegasus collected their first trophy of the season on Saturday when they beat their closest rivals Ballymoney 2-0 in the Ulster Shield final.

Joanne Campbell, in the first half, and Arlene Boyles, in the second, got the goals to turn the Ulster champions' clear superiority in the game into a comfortable victory.

Ballymoney will hope to do much, much better when they meet Hermes in the Irish Senior Cup final next month.

In the Leinster League, meanwhile, Railway Union moved into second place, above Hermes on goal difference, with a remarkable victory over UCD. Trailing 3-0, after just 20 minutes, Railway stormed back with goals from Ciara O'Brien (two), Beth Maguire and Karen Clarke, three of them in the second half, to take the points.

Pembroke Wanderers produced an even more dazzling comeback against Genesis, who had also led 3-0 after 20 minutes, winning 7-4 in the end. The defeat confirmed relegation for Genesis, who will be replaced by Trinity in Division One next season.

Hermes and champions Loreto will have to return to Booterstown another day to play their league tie after a sprinkler failure caused the postponement of their game on Saturday.

And in Munster the demise of UCC as a hockey force was confirmed on Saturday when their 4-0 defeat by Waterford confirmed their relegation from the first division.
