Kingpins CBC eye a golden fifth

Who can deny Christian Brothers College a record fifth title in a row? That's the big question surrounding this year's Munster Senior Cup. As in recent years, there is no obvious answer.

The Cork team have had another hugely impressive build-up to this season's competition, including victories over current Leinster champions Clongowes, along with Belvedere and Castleknock. Last year they came from behind to beat Rockwell 25-18.

It was the school's second four-in-a-row (which no other Munster school has done) and there is every indication that they will once again be pushing for the top honour come St Patrick's Day.

Ard Scoil Ris provide the opening challenge and while they will, as always, be difficult to overcome, CBC should progress to the semi-final, where they are likely to meet Rockwell.

CBC captain Frank Cogan was unfortunate to miss last year's final through injury, but the inspiring number eight is likely to feature strongly this year. Munster representatives Mark Canning and Colin Murphy are also back from last year.

The other half of the draw is more difficult to predict. The big third round clash is between Presentation Brothers College and St Munchin's and the winner of that game is likely to carry the momentum into the final.

St Munchin's fell to CBC in the final two years ago and while they haven't been that consistent this season (they have lost five of their 18 games), they are sure to be a formidable test for PBC. Coaches John Broderick and Colm McMahon have just three players from last year's team, but the younger players are coming through at a useful rate.

PBC fell to CBC in the quarter-final for the past two years and should they get past St Munchin's, then they are likely to get another shot at their Cork rivals.

The three first round matches should all be close affairs. Midleton recently heard the news that they are to benefit from a bye into the second round as Newtown withdrew from the cup. That gives them the chance of a second-round game for the first time in five years.

Glenstal have a good record this season and should provide a good match for Bandon, while the meeting of St Nessan's and Colaiste Mhuire should also be a tight affair. The remaining clash is between St Clement's and Waterpark.
