The IRFU have announced the affiliation of the Irish Women's Rugby Union (IWRU), which will bring not only financial support to the IWRU, but also technical, fitness and logistical support.

Founded in 1992, the IWRU now involves some 800 players throughout the country, structured on a provincial basis that includes an interprovincial championship, national leagues, a national cup and a number of international matches, including the Six Nations, and a European and World Cup.

Eddie Coleman, president of the IRFU, welcomed the affiliation, which is intended to consolidate and foster the sport in Ireland. "It is hoped now that the women's game will continue to grow and prosper and we in the IRFU are very pleased to be part of that determination."

The Irish team have their second Six Nations match on Friday when they face France at Castle Avenue (7.0). Currently seeded 10th in the world, the team will also play in next year's World Cup in Barcelona, along with 15 other leading rugby nations.
