Fenlon moves

PAT FENLON, one of the first test cases following the Bosman ruling, has ended weeks of speculation by joining Shamrock Rovers from Linfield. Deemed a free agent after his three-year contract at Windsor Park expired at the end of the season, Fenlon was entitled to move back across the Border without a transfer fee being involved.

The 27-year-old midfielder had been offered a new deal by Linfield, and had discussions with former clubs St Patrick's Athletic and Bohemians as well as Shelbourne.

"I'm delighted with the move," Fenlon said yesterday. "It was a hard decision to make. Not blowing my own trumpet, but pretty much all the Dublin clubs had discussions with me and only for the difficulties of work and travelling I might have stayed put. "Linfield are a professional club compared to a lot of clubs down here, but I believe Rovers are going in the right direction."

Meanwhile, Sligo Rovers are to sign Daniel Morena from Neptunes in Rotterdam on trial for six weeks at the end of June, thereby assisting them in the InterToto Cup. UEFA have confirmed that one of Sligo's away opponents will be Lillestrom of Norway, though they will not be able to confirm Sligo's Greek opponents until June 10th - a mere 12 days before the start of the competition and thus a logistical nightmare for the club during the peak holiday season. "The club are definitely going to lose around £6,000 by playing in this competition, that is even allowing for decent home gates," according to the club's commercial manager, Nick Brujos.
