Canavan on the right road

News round-up:Peter Canavan has made significant progress in his recovery from the ankle injury that had cast doubt over his participation in the All-Ireland football final on Sunday week.

The Tyrone captain sustained the injury in the first 15 minutes of the semi-final win over Kerry, and since then has been racing against time to be fit to start against the reigning champions, Armagh.

Yesterday the Tyrone manager Mickey Harte gave the strongest indication so far that his captain would be ready to play.

"Everything is going as well as we can expect," said Harte. "Peter's very positive about it, and very optimistic. He's got it in his head that there's no doubt that he'll be ready for the occasion, and that's the way we're looking at it."

At the GAA's Games Administration Committee last night, meanwhile, it was expected a discussion would take place on any possible course of action following John McEntee's incident with Donegal's Barry Monaghan during Armagh's successful All-Ireland semi-final last month.

It is believed the GAC will review video evidence of the incident, and decide then if any further course of action should be taken.

Though McEntee was only booked at the time, the GAC are open to pursue a further investigation, which could yet rule McEntee out of the All-Ireland final on Sunday week. So far Armagh have been given no indication of any further action.

The GAA are also set to host a celebration in Dunmanway in Cork on Saturday to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the first presentation of the Sam Maguire Cup.

All surviving winning captains from 1928 to the present day will congregate in Dunmanway, where a statue to Sam Maguire was erected last year.
