Bjorn has a diamond finish

Most husbands like to keep the wife happy, but few will manage it with the elan of Thomas Bjorn. Yesterday his eagle, par, eagle finish guaranteed that his spouse, Pernilla, would be able to sport a £100,000 diamond pendant.

The beautiful gem was on offer to any golfer who negotiated the par fives over the round rounds of the tournament in 14 under par. Applebys, who sponsored the prize, knew several competitors could achieve the feat during yesterday's final round, including Padraig Harrington.

Indeed the Irishman had made reference to the fact on Friday when he laughed that if anyone saw him taking out his driver from 260 yards, that they would know what he was chasing, irrespective of his position in the tournament.

Instead it was Bjorn who put himself in a position for the novel reward. Eight under the card when he stood on the par five, 16th tee, he knew that a tournament win was beyond his compass, so he refocused on trying to make an eagle. He hit a driver and three-wood to 15 feet and duly holed the putt.

The 18th was eminently reachable in two, and when Bjorn hit the perfect drive, the unique opportunity presented itself.

The gallery around the home green knew what was happening and the noise rose appreciably when his five-iron second shot came to rest 15 feet from the pin. Bjorn explained his feelings at that time: "I said to Ken (Bjorn's caddie) walking down to the green, 'I know that putt and I know the line it is going to take.' Actually Woosie's (Ian Woosnam) caddie said to me as well to just go down and do the job.

"It actually got a little more difficult when Woosie holed his eagle putt, because the tournament came into focus a little. But it was a good line, just outside right lip, when you have an important putt and it was in all the way."I don't really know what to say. To finish eagle-par-eagle, not only to finish high up in the tournament, but also to win the hundred grand diamond, is something special. I went out and played the par fives fantastically well this week and I was actually unlucky enough not to be higher up in the tournament overall."

Bjorn conceded that the realisation that he could not win the tournament helped him to focus on the prize diamond. "I think so. It was Darren's (Clarke) day out there. He played some fantastic golf and that is what you need to do on Sundays, and I just wasn't able to do that, especially on the front nine."

So how popular is he going to be when he eventually runs into Pernilla? "I think my wife is going to be a little bit happy, that's for sure, but I don't dare let her wear it. I don't know what to do right now but I'm sure we will have a little bit of fun with it."
