Construction workers involved in the demolition of Ballymun flats in Dublin are to meet representatives of the main UK contractor on the project on Wednesday to outline their safety concerns after the death of a man on the site three weeks ago.

Two workers claim they were dismissed because they have continually raised the issue of site safety with the Control Demolition Group (CDG). They say they have since been reinstated.

Some workers say a number of dangerous practices have been continuing at the site, and they have shown photographs to journalists.

One of the crane drivers climbed into his crane on the site at 5.30am yesterday in protest at being told last Friday that he was no longer welcome on the site. The man remained there for four hours until he received a letter from the managing director of Ballymun Regeneration Ltd (BRL), Ciarán Murray.

Mr Murray stated in the letter that BRL had "been in touch with Mr Steve Foster, director of CDG" who had confirmed that two named crane drivers had been "reinstated".

Mr Foster yesterday denied there were unsafe practices at the Ballymun site. "If it was unsafe we wouldn't be working there," he said.
