Gardaí have begun a murder inquiry following the fatal stabbing of a woman at a campus hotel in south Dublin.

The woman, a Romanian national in her 30s, was discovered in a room at a hotel on the Irish Management Institute (IMI) campus in Sandyford shortly after 7am.

A man in his 40s was taken by ambulance to St Vincent’s Hospital where he underwent surgery for knife wounds this morning. Details of his condition have not yet been disclosed.

The woman is understood to have been working as a nurse in Dublin and to have been visited a man at the hotel last night.

Det Insp Martin Cummins from Dundrum, who is co-ordinating the investigation, said: "We have a female, the deceased, and a male injured in hospital and we are conducting a full murder investigation."

"At this particular time, we are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident," he said. He also confirmed the deceased and the man in hospital were both non-Irish nationals.

The Assistant State Pathologist Michael Curtis carried out a preliminary examination of the body this morning before it was removed to the City Morgue for a postmortem.

An IMI spokesman said the IMI Residence is advertised on the internet as a three-star 50-bedroom hotel, and that is also used on occasion by people who are attending courses at the institute.

Neither the deceased nor the injured man are believed to have been students at the institute.

Hotel operator Prem Group, which manages the accommodation on behalf of the IMI, said the facilities provide short term corporate accommodation.

In a short statement, the company also confirmed it was assisting gardaí in their investigations.
