A woman is in a serious condition in hospital after she was rescued by emergency services from the River Liffey in Dublin city centre last night.

The woman, thought to be in her mid-30s, is understood to have entered the water at O'Connell Bridge and was rescued at the same spot at approximately 8.45pm.

A passerby witnessed the incident and entered the water after her in a rescue bid. Sources say he did not require any significant medical attention.

The Dublin Fire Brigade river rescue launch, as well as several units from Tara Street and Phibsboro stations, responded to the call. It is thought the woman may have been in the water for about five minutes.
