THE BUZZ CREATED around Pivot’s ultimately unsuccessful campaign for Dublin to become a World Design Capital in 2014 seems to have given rise to an increasing number of events and conversations about the multifaceted design industry.

Design Week is taking place around the country this week and dealing with all facets of design, from products to architecture, fashion to industry.

Tonight, from 6pm, at the Malthouse Design Centre, in Distillery Court, Dublin, there will be a free TalkShop organised by the Design Ireland collective (designireland.ie) with designers Sasha Sykes, Knut Klimmek, Kate Cronin and Elizabeth Fingleton sharing their experiences.

Úna Burke, the acclaimed young Irish fashion designer whose clothes have been drooled over and donned by everyone from Lady Gaga to Daphne Guinness, will give a free talk about her work at Dublin City Council’s Civic Office tomorrow at 7pm.

In Limerick tomorrow, Tom dePaor, of dePaor Architects, speaks at a free seminar in the School of Architecture at the University of Limerick, while, in Offaly, the Future Design Offaly Seminar offers a chance for prospective design students to seek advice on where to learn. Also tomorrow at the Culture Box in Temple Bar, another seminar’s focus is on lighting design under the heading of The Eight Rules of Light. On Thursday, James Gleick, the acclaimed science writer, will come to the Science Gallery in Dublin to talk about his new bestselling book, The Information. For more see designweek.ie.
