Van gets another day like that in queen's birthday honours list

VAN MORRISON and the chairman of the International Fund for Ireland, Mr William McCarter, are among 52 people from Northern Ireland honoured in Queen Elizabeth's Birthday List published today.

The Belfast singer, listed formally as Ivan Morrison, is awarded an OBE for services to music. Mr McCarter, who is also managing director of the troubled Derry and Donegal clothing company, Fruit of the Loom, is awarded a CBF for services to industry.

Thirteen women are among those honoured. A knighthood has been awarded to Prof Trevor Smith, vice chancellor of the University of Ulster.

Six police officers on the list include Chief Insp William Semple, who receives the Queen's Police Medal.

Three people have been given awards for their services to the rehabilitation of offenders.

Other recipients include a revenue official, a driver, a typing manager, civil servants, community workers and people in education, industry, agriculture, sports and charity.
