Two questioned over fatal shooting of man

Gardaí in Blanchardstown, Dublin, were last night continuing to question two people in relation to the city's latest killing.

Jason Tolan, Drumheath Drive, Mulhuddart, sustained a shotgun wound to the lower right leg on a piece of waste ground between Mulhuddart village and the Wellview estate at around 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

The two being detained are a 23-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman. They were arrested in the Mulhuddart area yesterday after gardaí raided a number of houses. Two shotguns were recovered during the raids.

The pair were being held at Blanchardstown Garda station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act. They can be held without charge for 48 hours.

It is understood the killing was not drug-related, despite Tolan having been an associate of members of the Westies drugs gang. Detectives are working on the theory that the killing was the culmination of a feud among associates that began over a year ago.

Gardaí believe a number of people known to each other were present when Tolan, a so-called joyrider, was shot. One of the party flagged down passing cars and raised the alarm.

However, despite the victim being rushed to James Connolly Memorial Hospital, he died shortly after 5 p.m.
