Gardai are still questioning two men after heroin valued at up to €8 million was seized as part of an ongoing investigation into one of Dublin’s biggest drugs gangs

The drugs were found yesterday afternoon at a property in the middle class north Dublin suburb of Sutton.

One of the suspects is a 23-year -old with addresses in Sutton and Howth. He has recently been released from jail. The other man is from Donaghmede but has been living in the UK.

The men were arrested when armed members of the Garda National Drugs Unit and Organised Crime Unit moved in on an address on Bayside Crescent, Sutton. A car outside the property was searched and 10kg of heroin was found.

Garda sources indicated the heroin was uncut.

The property on Bayside Crescent had been under surveillance as part of an ongoing operation into a major drugs gang operating in the Donaghmede and Baldoyle areas of north Dublin.

Officers believe the men are working for the gang whose leader has been missing presumed dead for a number of months.

The gang leader is believed to have been killed, and his remains dumped, by criminals who owed him money.

The suspect for the presumed murder is a criminal in his 20s from Kilbarrack, Dublin.

In the absence of the missing senior criminal the gang he led has continued to operate.

A surveillance operation resulting in the seizure was put in place after gardaí came into intelligence suggesting gang members were moving a large consignment of drugs.

The two men under arrest are being held at Raheny and Santry Garda stations under section 2 of the Drug Trafficking Act.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated operation gardaí have released a 44-year-old man who was being questioned about the seizure of heroin, cannabis plants and ecstasy valued at €250,000.

The drugs were discovered during a search at a house in Cavan town on Saturday.
