Two men have been arrested in Belfast following an armed robbery this morning in which a policeman had a pistol held to his head.

The men were captured shortly after hijacking a bus near Holy Cross Church on the Crumlin Road at around 7.30 a.m. The driver was forced at gunpoint to hand over a sum of cash.

A passing Police Service of Northern Ireland patrol was alerted and gave chase. The men were apprehended at the junction of Hesketh Road and Crumlin Road. A police spokesman said one of the men held a pistol to the head of a police officer in an attempt to escape.

The officer and the bus driver were treated in hospital for shock.
