Gardaí investigating organised crime in Limerick arrested two men in their twenties and recovered a loaded handgun after stopping a stolen car on the outskirts of the city last night.

The arrests were made shortly before 2am when a car, believed to be stolen, was observed by Gardaí in the city.

The car refused to stop when requested to do so and was subsequently stopped a short distance away on the Athlunkard Road, Corbally, just outside Limerick City.

Two men were arrested and a loaded Glock pistol was recovered from the vehicle.

Both men are being held under section 30 of the Offences Against The State Act at Henry Street and Mayorstone Garda Stations.

The men are aged 20 and 23 years.

The arrests were made by Limerick gardaí with the support of the Emergency Response Unit (ERU).
