Travel difficulties mounting for Bank Holiday

Bus Eireann is encouraging those leaving Dublin this Bank Holiday weekend to do so today if possible

Bus Eireann is encouraging those leaving Dublin this Bank Holiday weekend to do so today if possible. Busaras is expected to be extremely busy tomorrow afternoon and Saturday morning, and coaches have been carrying early travellers to their weekend destinations since 7.45 a.m. this morning.

Iarnrod Eireann will not be able to provide its normal Bank Holiday weekend service due to the ongoing Irish Locomotive Drivers' Association dispute. While some additional services will be implemented over the holiday period there will be difficulties on some routes, particularly those servicing Westport, Cork, Limerick and Tralee.

Iarnrod Eireann is encouraging people to dial 1850 366222 or check www.irishrail.ie before travelling.

Diversions begin tomorrow night at 10 p.m. to cope with the level of traffic travelling to the Witnness Festival at Fairyhouse Racecourse in Co Meath tomorrow and Saturday.

Only residents and motorists with official Garda passes will be allowed beyond these points. Motorists travelling from Ashbourne to Dunboyne and those journeying from Dunboyne to Ashbourne and Ratoath village are asked to travel via Dunshaughlin.

Motorists are advised that vehicles illegally parked will be towed away.

Gardai will be operating a community relations stand distributing car passes to residents, commercial firms and taxis at the main entrance to Fairyhouse today between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.

A Garda control centre will be established at Fairyhouse for the duration of the event.
