Teenagers 'serious but stable' after M50 crash

Two teenage boys are in "serious but stable" condition following a major crash on the M50 in Dublin over the weekend.

A 15-year-old is being treated in the James Connolly Memorial Hospital while a 13 year-old is in Temple Street Children's Hospital.

In a statement today, gardaí released the registration numbers of the three cars involved and have asked motorists on the M50 who may have seen the cars prior to the crash to contact them.

The vehicles involved in the crash were a green Toyota Camry registration 92 D 17234 travelling southbound towards the toll bridge; a Silver Nissan Almera registration 99 D 54381 travelling northbound from the toll bridge and a Silver Toyota Yaris registration 00 D 47714  also travelling northbound.

The Toyota Camry crashed through the median of the motorway and collided with the two oncoming cars shortly before noon yesterday. Seven people were injured in the pile-up, six seriously, including the two boys.

A 22-year-old woman is in a serious condition in Beaumont Hospital, a woman in her forties is being treated at the Mater Hospital.

Last night the Minister of State for Transport, Mr Ivor Callely said he was "not prepared to wait up to 15 months for median barriers or appropriate safety measures to be put in place. I will be meeting with my officials in the morning, and will be requesting a full investigation."

The National Roads Authority (NRA) is currently fitting safety barriers on all existing motorways - except the M50.

Three weeks ago five people were injured in a similar crash on the M1 close to the airport.
