Staff and students at Glenstal Abbey in Co Limerick are preparing to say goodbye to a much-loved teacher and rugby coach following the unexpected death of Brother Matthew Corkery. Brother Corkery (43), who was well known in school rugby circles, died in his sleep on Monday night.

Born in Co Cork in 1968, Brother Corkery was a pupil at Glenstal before joining it in 2000. He taught business and economics and was a house master before becoming director of activities. He is survived by his parents, a brother and two sisters. He will lie in Glenstal monastery from 3.30pm to 5pm today before removal to the abbey church. His funeral will take place at 11.30am tomorrow.
