American rock legend Bruce Springsteen makes a triumphant return to the Point Theatre tonight as part of a tour to promote his latest album.
The Boss last played in Dublin in May 2005 when he played a solo gig to support the release of his Devils and DustCD. This time, however, Springsteen comes backed by the 17-piece Seeger Sessions Band for a night of gospel, folk and blues.
Springsteen recently released a tribute album in which he covers tracks associated with Pete Seeger, one of America's leading folk singers. We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessionshas been critically acclaimed and is currently number two in the Irish charts.
Elsewhere this weekend, art lovers are expected to flock to one of Ireland's most historic galleries, when the Hugh Lane Gallery reopens its doors to the public on Friday.
Impressionist paintings by Renoir, Manet, Monet, Pissarro and Degas are the main attraction at the gallery, which had been closed due to a €13 million expansion.
The Hugh Lane is also opening a permanent Sean Scully exhibition room, which has been specially designed in collaboration with the artist, and it will also be showing a major retrospective of the work of Patrick Ireland, who is considered one of the most important conceptual artist of his generation.
Galway will be playing host to the All-Ireland Open Fly-Tying Championships at the Menlo Park Hotel, which is expected to prove popular with keen anglers.
In conjunction with the competition, Marvin Nolte, one of the leading fly tiers, will be giving a workshop on classic salmon flies.
Drama fans are also catered for this weekend with the opening tonight of the RTÉ All Ireland Drama Festival at the Dean Crowe Theatre in Athlone. Having been in continuous existence since 1953, the festival it is one of the most popular drama gatherings in Ireland
Met Éireann forecasts a somewhat unpredictable weekend weather-wise with sun, showers and gales expected.
