The National Roads Authority and Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council will this morning sign a contract for the Wyattville interchange in south Co Dublin.

The major interchange is one of the last associated with the motorway bypass for Dublin, the M50. It will link the N11 Dublin-Wexford road and the C-Ring, also serving the developing Science and Technology Park at Loughlinstown.

The £20 million contract, to be signed with contractors Jons Civil Engineering, will entail the building of a "D-loop" and bridge over the N11, replacing the Wyattville junction.

This will allow traffic coming east from the M50 to enter the local road network and travel by dual carriageway along Wyattville Road via Church Road, Killiney, and along a new road between the Graduate and Deerhunter pubs in Killiney and Glenageary respectively, and on to Dun Laoghaire port.

The network of roads served by the D-Loop will also allow traffic from the Science and Technology Park to access either the N11 to Rosslare port or Dublin Airport via the M50.

Mr John Guckian of Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council confirmed that the M50 between the Tallaght interchange and Scholarstown was complete but would probably not open until the motorway was complete as far as Ballinteer, expected in June. This is to allow the completion of local relief roads.

Mr Guckian said construction was ready to begin on the Dundrum bypass, but this would require the closure of the Ballinteer Road as a bridge between Dundrum Castle and Dundrum Main Street was rebuilt. The closure would be for about six months, from mid-February.

The timetable for the completed bypass from the M11 (Bray bypass) to the M1 (airport road) envisages completion by late 2003/early 2004.
