Members of the Garda sub-aqua unit will this morning resume their search for the body of a man who fell from a bridge in Galway city into the Corrib river on Monday afternoon. A daylong search yesterday yielded nothing. Garda divers first began searching for the missing man on Monday evening but were forced to abandon their efforts as night fell.

The 19-year-old from Cork fell from the Quincentenary Bridge in Galway city at lunchtime on Monday. It is understood he was a student at NUI Galway. A second youth who fell into the water at the same time was treated for shock at University College Hospital.

The missing man had not been named last night. He was the second man to fall into the river over the bank holiday weekend.

On Saturday morning Mr John Laffey (50), from Salthill, died after falling into the Corrib. He was drowned at a canal lock at the Claddagh Basin. A passer-by attempted to rescue him. Mr Laffey's body was removed from the water by the fire service.

A third man also died during a fishing trip in Co Tipperary over the weekend.

Dr Jim Molloy (54), whose surgery was in Tramore, is believed to have tripped and drowned when fishing a fast-flowing stretch of the Suir at Twoford Bridges, Holycross, during the weekend.

Dr Molloy had previously worked at the former County & City Infirmary in Waterford.
