RUC unveil plan to counter pipe bombers

A senior RUC officer today revealed an eight-point strategy to counter a recent spate of sectarian attacks in Coleraine, Co Derry.

The RUC claim there have been five pipe bomb attacks in the town in January, three of which are believed to be sectarian. Yesterday two Catholic families escaped injury after separate pipe bomb attacks on their homes.

Acting Assistant Chief Constable for the RUC’s North Region, Mr Norman Walmsley, said the plan included an increase in military patrols, including covert operations and more 'stop and search' checkpoints.

He said the RUC was eager to enlist the help of the clergy and councillors to express revulsion at this "bigoted activity".

Greater forensic analysis at crime scenes and a wide-ranging search of properties would be undertaken in an attempt to find those responsible.

Mr Walmsley added his officers would provide a professional and sympathetic response to victims and intended working closely with the local media.
