Newspaper reports about the Monica Coghlan affair led to Lord Archer resigning from two top Tory political positions.
He resigned as Tory deputy chairman on October 26th 1986, when the News of the World reported he had instructed a friend to give Ms Coghlan "an envelope crammed with £50 notes".
In 1999, after the News of the World said it would be publishing a story about him asking Mr Ted Francis for a false alibi, Archer stood down as a candidate in the London mayoral election.
