Redmond in court on 10 tax charges

The former assistant Dublin city and county manager, Mr George Redmond, made a brief appearance in the District Court yesterday.

His solicitor, Mr Anthony Harris, asked Judge David Anderson for an adjournment of the case until next Tuesday when, he indicated, Mr Redmond would be making a signed plea.

Mr Frank Cassidy of the Chief State Solicitor's office said he had just received notice of the defendant's intention to make a plea.

Agreeing to the adjournment, Judge Anderson said he was not available on Tuesday and the case would be heard by a different judge. Mr Redmond did not speak during the hearing.

Mr Redmond (75), of Deer park Lawns, Castleknock, faces 10 charges of failing to make tax returns between 1988 and 1998. The charges followed his arrest by officers of the Criminal Assets Bureau last July. Last February, Mr Redmond was arrested at Dublin Airport after he returned from the Isle of Man with £300,000 in cash and cheques in his possession. Files seized from his house by CAB officers on that occasion were the subject of a protracted legal battle between the bureau and the Flood tribunal.

He has been under investigation by the tribunal since Mr James Gogarty accused him of receiving money in return for planning favours.

Mr Redmond denies the accusation.
