A radical new community housing project which is about to open in Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, has invited applications from the over 65s in need of a home.
Loreto Village, a development of 16 single-bedroom apartments, 11 two-bedroom apartments and a community centre was developed with the aid of the St John of God order of nuns and the Enniscorthy Community Housing project.
The project has recently invited applications from local elderly people in need of a home. While preference will be given to the local community, the organising committee has not ruled out accepting applications from further afield.
Described as "sheltered accommodation" the residents will enjoy independent living, making their own arrangements for lighting and heating, with their own accounts for utilities and their own television.
The units are mostly available to rent, with a limited number available to buy. The residents must undertake to find alternative accommodation should they need a higher level of care.
Included among the agencies which supported the development are the South Eastern Health Board, the Department of the Environment, Wexford County Council, the local community and the order of nuns.
A committee has been set up to assess applications and information is available from the Community Centre, at Loreto Village, Enniscorthy, Co Wexford.
Under a capital assistance scheme, grants are available for a range of voluntary housing initiatives such as housing for the elderly.
