New Defence Forces head named

Major General Sean McCann has been chosen to succeed Lieut Gen Dermot Earley as the Defence Forces new Chief of Staff.

The announcement was made by Minister for Defence Tony Killeen earlier today.

Major General McCann will take over the new role on Sunday following the decision of Lieut Gen Earley to take retirement. In his position as Chief of Staff, Major General McCann will be the head of the Army, Naval Service and Air Corps.

Lieut Gen Earley, who was due to retire next year on age grounds, has been on sick leave since January and during his absence his duties have been carried out by Deputy Chief of Staff Maj Dave Ashe.

Speaking today, Minister Killeen congratulated Major General McCann on his new appointment and also paid tribute to Lieut-Gen Earley for his contribution to public life.

"On behalf of the Government, I would like to wish him well in his retirement and to thank him for his hard work and commitment over many years of service in the Defence Forces," said Mr Killeen.

"The leadership, professionalism and dedication shown by him has brought great honour on the Defence Forces and on this nation as a whole,” he added.

Fine Gael Defence spokesman, Jimmy Deenihan congratulated Major General Sean McCann on his appointment and acknowledged the 44 years of service of Lieut Gen Earley.

"He has been an outstanding soldier and gifted leader who performed his duties as Chief of Staff and throughout his career with unerring dedication," said Mr Deenihan.
