The proposed closing of three major rail links in the south east as part of a cost-cutting measure has been has been criticised by Fine Gael as the "exact opposite of the approach required for rail infrastructure".
Party transport spokesperson, Mr Denis Naughten TD, today told ireland.comthat unions had been informed of a plan to cut services at a recent meeting with Iarnrod Eireann management.
They are part of a package of measures to be put before the Government in an bid to reduce a reported €25 million deficit at Iarnrod Eireann for the current year.
Mr Naughten said the plan would see the Dublin-Rosslare Harbour rail link; the Rosslare Harbour-Waterford rail link and the Waterford-Limerick connections severed.
He said is was possible that an Arklow-Dublin service may be retained for commuters. The company was also examining whether it would be viable to open the Rosslare links during the peak summer months.
If the plan goes ahead, commuters in Enniscorthy, Wexford town and Rosslare Harbour will be without a rail link.
It is understood Irish Ferries will oppose any closing of rail links to Rosslare Harbour.
Unions and Iarnrod Eireann management will meet tomorrow to discuss the plans in more detail. It is not yet clear how many staff will be affected if the move goes ahead.
