While the Department of Justice has agreed to pay the costs of repatriating the body of a Chinese man who died violently in Dublin two weeks ago, fund-raising is continuing to help the family who have run into debt travelling to Ireland.

Zhi Song (23) was fatally stabbed in the house he shared with five other Chinese nationals in the Rialto area. He had interrupted an intruder.

His parents - mother Zhang Chun Siang and father Ji Dong - have been in Ireland since last week. Having borrowed heavily to raise over €3,000 to fly here at short notice, they are unable to fund the estimated €10,000 cost of repatriating the body. A number of fund-raising efforts are under way. The Irish Chinese Information Centre has opened an account for the family at AIB in Stillorgan, Co Dublin.

Other events include an auction and poker tournament this weekend. Art historian and lecturer, Paul O'Kelly, and his wife, Irene Whelan, hope to raise up to €10,000 at a poker tournament in Fitzwilliam Card Club in Dublin on Sunday. Mr O'Kelly can be contacted at obsignal@yahoo.com
