THE GARDA has appealed for motorists to “face up to their responsibilities and stop reckless behaviour” on the roads over the August bank holiday weekend.
With thousands of people expected to travel to summer festivals and holiday homes in the coming days, the Garda reminded motorists that 28 people were killed or seriously injured last August bank holiday.
The Garda and the Road Safety Authority have launched a “slow down for us” appeal, in which family members and friends are being asked to remind drivers of the consequences for them, of dangerous driving.
The Garda also said motorists can expect “considerable resources” to be deployed against those who drink and drive, speed or neglect to wear seatbelts.
In Wicklow, the Bray Summerfest continues through the weekend and the Galway Races Festival continues at Ballybrit until Sunday. In Co Donegal, the Mary from Dungloe festival takes place until Monday and in Meath, the Le Chéile Festival is under way in Oldcastle. Race meetings are on Cork on Sunday and at Naas on Monday.
In Co Kildare the Rathangan Lughnasa Festival runs to Monday while in Durrow, Co Laois, a Howya Festival will take place on Sunday only. In Dublin the GAA senior football championship quarter finals take place on Sunday.
Iarnród Éireann has amended timetables to provide a train service for supporters from Limerick, Charleville and Limerick Junction for Limerick versus Meath football qualifier in O’Moore Park, Portlaoise, tomorrow at 7pm.
The Luas Red Line in Dublin will terminate at Abbey Street from Saturday until Monday. The Connolly and Busáras stops will reopen on Tuesday.
The Road Safety Authority has advised motorists to expect increased traffic and to allow extra time for journeys.
