RATIFICATION OF the Lisbon Treaty will enable the EU to intensify its fight against international drug trafficking, according to Brian Crowley, Fianna Fáil MEP for the South constituency.

He said if the treaty was ratified an EU foreign affairs and security high representative would be appointed and this “will help the European Union pursue policies in a global context so that we can defeat the international drug barons”.

Seven coastal EU countries are members of an anti-narcotics programme which aims to halt drugs shipments. “Organised crime is international by nature, and the EU has to work more closely with other countries around the world if we are to effectively tackle the scourge of illegal drug trafficking,” said Mr Crowley.
