A firm that specialises in manufacturing equipment for oil and gas drilling rigs has announced the creation of 140 jobs in Longford town.

Cameron Ireland is to invest €15 million in its midlands plant as part of a five-year expansion plan.

Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Micheál Martin said Cameron was a good example of an evolving company and noted that it had opened a research and development centre in Longford in 2004.

The company has been operating in Longford since 1978 and employs over 220 people. Minister Martin said the investment was significant boost to the engineering sector in the Midlands and would benefit the region.

Cameron Ireland is owned by Cameron International Corporation which designs and manufactures products for the oil and gas industry.

It employs 12,400 people worldwide and has annual revenues of $3.74 billion (€2.37 billion) and net income of $318 million (€202 million).
