A 23-year-old man will appear in court in Dublin this morning to answer charges connected to a double stabbing incident at the weekend in which one man died and another was seriously injured.

A post-mortem was being carried out yesterday on the 24-year-old who was killed in the attack, while the second victim, a 32-year-old man, was still in a critical condition at Tallaght Hospital last night.

All three men involved in the incident, which happened at a housing estate in Lucan late on Sunday evening, were Lithuanian.

The man later detained by gardaí was being held overnight in Ronanstown Garda station, pending his appearance at Kilmainham District Court this morning.

A Garda spokesman said he was being charged under the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, but added that the inquiry into the incident was continuing.

Two Garda forensic tents had been erected yesterday at the site of the stabbings, on Earlsfort View and around the corner on Earlsfort Drive, Lucan. Neighbours in Earlsfort Drive heard a row develop at around 10 p.m. on Sunday and saw a man being assaulted on the ground outside. They ran to his aid, but he was already seriously injured. He was taken to James Connolly Memorial Hospital, Blanchardstown, where he later died.

A fire brigade and ambulances were called to the scene, and a group of gardaí also arrived and arrested a man nearby.

It is thought that the row began in a house in Earlsfort Drive. Earlier on Sunday, the windscreen of a car had been smashed on the same road.
