Man killed in Kilkenny quarry incident

A man in his 50s has been killed in an incident in a limestone quarry in Co Kilkenny.

A man in his 50s has been killed in an incident in a limestone quarry in Co Kilkenny.

The Health Service Executive (HSE) said emergency services were called to Bennettsbridge Limestone Quarries at Sheastown at around 11.30am following reports of a serious accident.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body was taken to St Luke's Hospital in Kilkenny.

Nine firemen and seven quarry workers were also treated in hospital following the incident but none suffered serious injuries.

A Garda spokesman said the incident at the quarry, which is five miles from Kilkenny city, is being investigated by gardaí and the HSE.

Management at the hospital have appealed to members of the public to avoid the A&E department if possible and consult a GP instead.
