Man held in Dublin shooting inquiry

Gardaí have arrested a second man in connection with the fatal shooting of Christopher Warren in Dublin last week.

The man, who is in his late 20s, was arrested in the Dublin 8 area this morning and is being detained under the provisions of section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007 at Mountjoy Garda station.

Another man held  in connection with the shooting  has been freed without charge. The man, who is in his late 20s and from Coolock, was arrested on Saturday and was being questioned at Kevin Street Garda station under section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007.

A file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Gardaí began their investigation after Warren was left at St James's Hospital in the south inner city at about 7pm on Friday suffering from gunshot wounds. He later died of his injuries.

Gardaí believe Warren (35), who was from St Teresa’s Gardens on Donore Avenue in Dublin’s south inner city, had assaulted a woman late last week and had been summoned to meet a number of men close to her for a punishment attack. Intelligence suggests he believed he would be beaten in order to settle the issue, but instead a handgun was discharged, fatally wounding him.

Gardaí believe the people at the scene may have panicked and bundled Warren into a car. They drove him to his partner’s house and then a number of other locations before he was finally taken to St James’s Hospital in a blue Mercedes. He arrived at 7pm and was pronounced dead a short time later.

The car was later found abandoned on Cork Street in Dublin 8.
