Man due in court to face charge over bus death incident as victim named

A man is due to appear in court this morning charged with the manslaughter of a man crushed to death by a double-decker bus.

The victim lost his life at the junction of Nassau Street and Dawson Street in Dublin’s south inner city last Thursday evening.

The victim was punched or pushed and lost his balance, causing him to fall into the road as a 145 double-decker bus was passing.

The deceased has been named as Eoghan Dudley (29), originally from Rathfarnham, south Dublin. Mr Dudley was a drug user and was believed to beg to feed his drugs habit.

He was not known for involvement in crime.

Mr Dudley was from a middle-class background. He had been living of late in rented accommodation in Newcastle, Co Wicklow.

His mother is a senior official with the Department of Foreign Affairs based at an Irish Embassy abroad. She was travelling home last night.

The man due to appear in court this morning is deaf and mute.

He was arrested in the city centre on Friday afternoon after being identified as a suspect when CCTV of the incident was viewed.

Mr Dudley travelled by bus into the city centre on Thursday afternoon from Tallaght.

He became involved in an altercation with others outside a shop near the junction of Nassau Street and Dawson Street at 5.40pm, which resulted in his fall into the road and being crushed under the bus wheels.

The incident was witnessed by a number of people out late-night shopping.

Mr Dudley was not carrying ID and suffered severe head injuries. When gardaí had still not identified him early on Saturday they released details of his tattoos and piercings. This in turn led to information that identified him.
