Man detained over stabbing dead of woman in Sandyford

GARDAÍ IN Dundrum, Co Dublin have arrested a man aged in his 40s in connection with the death of a woman in an apartment in Sandyford last week.

The man was last night being detained at Dundrum Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, under which he can be held for up to 24 hours.

Gardaí discovered the body of the woman in the apartment in the grounds of the Irish Management Institute at 7am last Thursday, after they received a telephone call from a resident of the apartment and a security guard.

When gardaí arrived at the scene they discovered the victim’s body under bedclothes in the rented apartment. They also found a man at the apartment who had suffered a number of stab wounds to the neck.

Gardaí believe that this man and the dead woman, who was a Romanian nurse, were the only two people in the apartment when the stabbing occurred. The man, aged in his late 40s, was taken by ambulance to St Vincent’s hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

He is understood to be a Romanian national and investigating officers were this week working on the theory that the man’s injuries had been self-inflicted. He regularly travelled between Ireland and Romania and was renting the accommodation where the killing took place.

Gardaí believe the dead woman and this man had been having a relationship and the woman had been staying with him overnight.
