A MAN HAS been left in a critical condition in hospital after suffering head injuries during an incident outside a nightclub at the weekend in Dublin’s city centre.

The 22-year-old victim from Glasnevin, north Dublin, underwent surgery after the incident in the early hours of last Sunday morning outside Whelans on Wexford Street in the south inner city.

Gardaí have launched a public appeal in their efforts to find an unidentified male who pushed the injured man on Camden Row, at the side of Whelans. The victim stumbled after he was pushed and hit his head on a bollard.

The incident occurred at about 1.15am last Sunday. The injured man was taken to St James’s Hospital. However, his condition deteriorated, and he was transferred to Beaumont Hospital.

He underwent surgery for his head injuries and after a period in the intensive care unit he was transferred to the high-dependency unit, where he remains.

Garda sources said the victim, whose family has requested his name not be used by the media at this time, was socialising with friends in the city centre into Sunday morning.

He became involved in an “animated discussion” with one of his friends at the side of Whelans. Another man, who was not known to the victim or his friend, interrupted the discussion and pushed the 22-year-old Dubliner, who then hit his head.

The unidentified male ran from the scene down Wexford Street and on to Aungier Street. Gardaí believe he may have hailed a taxi on Dame Street.

The man has been captured on CCTV pushing the victim. Gardaí said while they were treating the incident as assault, the victim was not struck but simply hit his head after he stumbled when pushed.

Gardaí are appealing for the unidentified man to contact them. Failing that, gardaí at Kevin Street have asked members of the public who may have information to come forward. Gardaí in Kevin Street are available on (01) 6669400 or on the Garda confidential line on 1800 666111.
