A man in his 40s was yesterday charged in connection with the death of a Trinity student in a hit-and-run incident in Dublin last year. Lily Hastings Bass (20), a British national, from Newbury, Berkshire, was hit by a car outside a petrol station on the Rathgar Road on November 26th, 2006.

She died in St James's Hospital on December 7th when her family decided to switch off her life-support machine.

At Dublin District Court yesterday, Eric Doyle (42), Whitechurch Avenue, Rathfarnham, Dublin, was charged with dangerous driving causing death.

Det Sgt John McGeary of Rathmines Garda station told the court he had arrested Mr Doyle on Leeson Street at 2.20pm yesterday and taken him to Rathmines station. He had made no reply when charged.

Mr Doyle was wearing a white jumper, tracksuit bottoms and runners in court.

His solicitor, Kevin Tunney, said his client was married with two children.

He had been questioned twice by gardaí - the last occasion being in April - and that he had €1,000 available to the court.

Judge Aeneas Joseph McCarthy remanded Mr Doyle in custody with bail set at €500 of his own bond, with independent surety of €2,000, of which €1,000 was to be lodged.

He ordered that Mr Doyle sign on every Friday at Rathfarnham Garda station between 9am and 9pm, and directed that he appear before the court again on August 22nd at 10.30am.

None of Ms Hastings Bass's family was in court yesterday.
