Loyalists questioned after Derry shooting

Police are questioning a number of loyalists after a drive-by shooting in Co Derry left a Catholic man injured.

A Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) spokesan said the man was shot in the hand when a red Vauhhall Nova drove up to him as he was standing on the side of the road waiting for a lift at Clady Corner at about 7.15 a.m.

Three shots were fired by one of the two masked men inside before the car sped off in the direction of Portglenone, Co Antrim, a few miles away.

The car has since been found burned-out at Gortcloe Road on the far side of Portglenone. It is belived the attackers switched cars here.

The spokesman said the car was seen driving through Clady village prior to the shooting, and then turning back to target the injured man. He did not give a motive for the attack, but appealed for witnesses to contact the police.

Police in Derry city confirmed a number of arrests were made today in the Protestant Waterside area of the city, where a number of Catholic houses have been targeted in a series of pipe bomb attacks by loyalists .

One of the houses hit was the home of an SDLP councillor, Mr Gerry Diver.
