Irish couple drowned in Sardinia named

The Department of Foreign Affairs have named the Irish couple who drowned in a Sardinian hotel pool yesterday.

They were Barbara May Reeves (25) from Limerick and Shane Gerard O'Brien (32) from Co Clare.

It is understood that one person was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other died on the way to hospital.

The incident happened inthe swimming pool at the three-star Hotel Oasis in Alghero, a small town on the west coast of Sardinia, between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. yesterday.

Italian police are investigating the incident.

Sunway Holidays, through whom the couple travelled, said they regretted the incident.

A spokeswoman said thecompany wished to express its "deepest condolences tothe families, relatives and friends of the couple at this tragic time".
