Heavy overnight flooding in many areas of Leinster and the east coast is expected to have extended to north-east Ulster by this morning.

In Dublin and Wicklow, where some of the worst flooding occurred, a number of streams burst their banks causing cars to be abandoned and forcing the curtailment of DART services.

The Dublin Garda Control Centre noted reports of cars being abandoned due to flooding across the city, and the N/M11 was sealed off at Bray due to severe flooding on approach roads.

In Dublin a number of roads have been flooded including Leeson Street, Camden Street, Dorset Street, the Coast Road in Sandycove, Sherrard Street, Pembroke Road, James Street, Richmond Road, and the Ballymun Roundabout.

The AA reported heavy rain had caused flooding on some roads in Waterford, the Tramore Road being particularly bad as potholes were causing difficulties.

DART services between Booterstown and Greystones were interrupted from late evening but were restored as far as D·n Laoghaire by 10 p.m. A spokesman said the company was hopeful of having a full service in place this morning.

Delays were also experienced by ferries operating on the Irish Sea, with Rosslare Port encountering severe north-easterly winds.

Although the worst of the rain fall is expected to have passed by this morning, garda∅ are advising extreme caution to anyone driving in the eastern part of the country and Met ╔ireann has warned of continuing high winds.
