Haughey sells his property in Sligo

The house and lands in Co Sligo bequeathed to Mr Charles Haughey almost 30 years ago are being sold to a buyer from Dublin.

Mr John Ryan, of John Ryan Auctioneers, Sligo, said: "I think the sale is agreed. We are nearly there." The asking price was £100,000 and Mr Ryan said he was "happy" with what they got. "We have done pretty well."

The house, on 9.12 acres, is on the coast at Lislarry, about three miles from Grange and 11 miles from Sligo town. It was left to Mr Haughey in 1972 by Mr John Currid, from the area, who ran an amusement arcade on Dublin's Talbot Street. The house had been used as a holiday home by the Haughey family. It was put up for sale on the instructions of Mrs Eimear Mulhern, the daughter of the former Taoiseach, almost eight weeks ago.

According to the estate agents, the 100-year-old asbestos-roofed property has 957 sq ft of accommodation incorporating two bedrooms, a living room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom and entrance porch. It has electric storage heaters and is just 50 yards from the seafront.

The buyer, it is understood, intends using it as a holiday home.

Mr Haughey is also selling a small part of his Kinsealy estate in north Dublin for about £5 million in an attempt to meet his legal and tax bills.
