Hatchet attack victim in serious condition

A man was in a stable but serious condition in St James's Hospital, Dublin, last night after having been the victim of a hatchet attack on the southside of the city late on Sunday.

The German national, who is in his late 20s, was attacked at Bow Bridge Place, Kilmainham, just before midnight on Sunday. Gardaí said they were alerted to the attack following a call to the emergency services requesting an ambulance at the scene.

The victim suffered severe head injuries and lost a significant amount of blood. He also broke his wrist and received lacerations to much of his upper body.

The man was not well enough to be interviewed by gardaí on Sunday night but he gave a statement to detectives yesterday. Gardaí at Kilmainham are appealing for anyone who may have been in the Military Road or Bow Bridge Place area between 10 p.m. and midnight on Sunday to come forward.

Meanwhile, Bray gardaí searching for the killer of a Chinese woman in the town last week have issued a fresh appeal for assistance. They want to speak to a taxi driver who brought two Chinese men in their early 20s from Blackrock to Tara Street last Friday morning between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.

The taxi is described as a "people carrier" type vehicle with a taxi sign on the roof. Gardaí believe the driver may have given his business card to one of the male passengers.
