A GP who worked for an out of hours service has had six allegations of professional misconduct brought against him at a Medical Council fitness to practise inquiry this morning.

Dr George Dimitrov Georgiev, from South Africa, allegedly attempted to resuscitate a patient who had a heart attack while the patient was sitting in a chair.

It was also alleged he failed to explain to the family that his patient, John Dunne, was in a critical condition and that he failed to call an ambulance or that he cancelled an ambulance when he realised Mr Dunne was dead.

He also allegedly failed to tell the family how to deal with Mr Dunne once he had passed away.

Mr Dunne died of heart failure in July 2009. His wife, Elizabeth Dunne and his daughter Frances Magee complained to the Medical Council about Dr Georgiev's behaviour.

Counsel for Dr Georgiev, Eileen Barrington BL, told the fitness to practise committee that her client was in South Africa and had not yet got a visa to travel to Ireland on his South African passport. He had also offered to make undertakings, including that he would not practise again in Ireland.

But she objected to the case going ahead given her client was not present and she applied for an adjournment.

The committee retired to consider the application.
