Mutating between buzz-saw DIY punk rock and naive, pastoral pop music, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci are from Wales, yet are as far removed from the current crop of Welsh rock groups as one can imagine.
No swagger, blustering lyrics or streamlined poise from this lot on Wednesday, but rather a natural and distinctly organic approach that makes their music perhaps lower key but probably more engaging.
The end result - shiny, happy and frequently atonal - is not what you would expect from a band that was once on a major label and whose latest album, Spanish Dance Troupe, receives airplay from daytime Radio 1 (BBC, that is).
Multi-faceted songs are delivered with equal parts studiousness and smirks. They swap their instruments regularly, too, with no apparent drop in quality, and the way lead singer Euros Childs hunches over his keyboards, ready to pounce on the unsuspecting keys, is a hoot.
Inheriting the legacies of Robert Wyatt and Brian Eno (with a hint of avant-popsters Henry Cow thrown in to mess things up), the band succeeds on all fronts.
