Gatland confirms Wasps role

Former Ireland coach Warren Gatland has confirmed he is to accept a coaching role at English side Wasps.

Former Ireland coach Warren Gatland has confirmed he is to accept a coaching role at English side Wasps.

Gatland, who had his contract terminated by the IRFU last November, will become the new forwards coach of the Zurich Premiership side. The New Zealander, still enjoying an extended holiday in his homeland, will work alongside director of rugby Nigel Melville at Wasps.

Gatland, who has settled in the west of Ireland, does not intend to uproot his family from their Galway home and plans to commute to London in the short term at least.

Speaking to the London Sunday Times, Gatland revealed he spoke to New Zealand coach, John Mitchell, before making his mind up. Mitchell has previously worked with Melville at the London club.

"I knew Nigel was a good guy and Mitch confirmed it," he explained.

"Nigel knows that I've got a lot more to offer than just coaching the forwards and we've also had a chat about that."

Gatland also revealed the financial package Wasps were offering influenced his decision.

"The Wasps offer is appealing for monetary reasons as well as rugby reasons," he said.

"It's a lucrative deal, bigger than the one I was on with Ireland . . . I can't afford to turn it down."
